      | GIRLS ON CURLS. CELTICS ADVANCE. BRUINS IN GAME 7 TODAY. IT'S DO OR DIE.We saw your segment on NH Chronicle and have become fans of your work. We are required to have a mentor for our school project who is knowledgeable in our area. We are reaching out to see if you would be interested in meeting with us to hear more about what that would entail.”

That NH Chronicle piece on me last winter was more far reaching than I originally had thought. I mean, I was one of thousands to be on “The Chronicle”. Let’s face it, it’s not that unique, I mean Sean McDonald does   2-3 of them every week. They have it down to a science. So I looked at it as one of many who have appeared on this local NH piece. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not dismissing it’s value or putting it down in any way. It’s just that there are many who have appeared on it. And my piece was truly unique, because they showed a part of winter surfing, that has never been covered before. The angle from the photographer’s perspective. That has never been done before. And it was well received across the state.

Including four Derryfield High School girls from Manchester. Alyssa Shula, Elena Moore, Ava Young, and Christine Nadeau. On March 23rd, 2023
I received an email from Alyssa and her classmates about a senior High School project they wanted to do.

Here’s an excerpt from that email: “The last 6 weeks of senior year at our school are spent doing individual projects of our choosing. The four of us have chosen to learn how to surf while creating a documentary of our process! We are super excited to start surfing in late April.

Me a mentor? Hmm. Well, I suppose I’ve been a mentor to several individuals over the years involving a number of different careers and undertakings. Some have gone on to become successful, and continue to do what I mentored them in. And I’m talking about music, surfing, military, and just life in general. But, four High School seniors? Then I remembered that I taught my own two daughters how to surf, and I’ve been teaching my granddaughters how to surf.

So I thought about it for all of 5 minutes when I replied with this email.

 Hello Alyssa (and friends),
Well, this is a first. But before we go any further here. Here's another FIRST. The FIRST Ever Movie about women surfers from the Northeast. GRANITE GIRLS and The River Women. I made this movie in 2018. It would be required viewing on all of you "would be surfers" should we embark on this project together.

All kidding aside, you should watch the movie. It's pretty informative and I believe it would give you great insight as to what surfing is like here on the NH coast.

But to answer your question? Yeah, I'd love to help you all out. My two daughters surf. My three granddaughters also have started surfing/boogieboarding. It's a wonderful lifestyle.

I can get you all set up through CINNAMON RAINBOWS with wetsuits/soft top surfboards. And I guarantee, that we can get you all surfing on your first day.

Here's the link to my movie. (or see the movie embedded in the Blog at the top of this page.)

Thank you for reaching out to me.

 "Surfing Heals All Wounds"

 Ralph

So we met for the first time at KB’s on King’s Highway. I always love stopping in there from time to time, to see my old friend. I’m talking about my Mural on the back wall. She’s still there and still looking pretty damn good if I do say so myself. Because of my age, I already forgot all of their names. We hashed over what we would be required of them and my input. Because they are just under an hour away, the logistics of meeting up getting the proper gear, and all of that would take some doing.

But the first meeting went well. I learned that they are all athletes and play Lacrosse. And that Ava is a strong swimmer. That was my first question to them all. “Do you know how to swim?” They all answered yes. You’d be surprised at how many non-swimmers take up surfing. I know I know. That’s a head scratcher for sure. But these girls were the real deal athletes so I felt comfortable working with them.

Our second meeting was a God send because after we toured my studio, and they met my wife Cory, we went to the beach and ran into the Queen of North Beach, Erica Nardone. Talk about good luck. Erica is not only one of the better women surfers in NH but she’s also a Lacrosse coach! I mean, what are the chances? So I immediately asked her if she would join me with this project. She did not hesitate one bit and said yes. I knew that our project had just moved up the ladder of success a couple of rungs having connected with Erica. I’ve learned through many things in life, that surrounding yourself with the proper people will only enhance your chances of success. And Erica also offered the assistance of her daughter Clara.

The project that I now named GIRLS ON CURLS The Derryfield High School Surf Mission was coming together.

Our next stop was to meet with Dave Cropper form Cinnamon Rainbows. Another Godsend. Dave was so encouraging and generous with his help with setting the girls up with all the gear they need. We even had the US Team Coach himself come down to offer some words of wisdom. Kevin Grondin was more than happy to give out some of his worldly advice on the sport and lifestyle that helped shape his life. Things were shaping up for the GIRLS ON CURLS The Derryfield HS Surf project. The girls all signed the waiver.

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys.
He was a dear friend of mine. When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers. Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

I REALLY HOPE THEY WIN TONIGHT. IT WOULD BE TRULY HEARTBREAKING IF THEY LOSE. AFTER THE INCREDIBLE SEASON THEY HAD. Come on B's Play Like You Did before The Playoffs. Kick some ass tonight. *THIS JUST IN. B's lose 4-3 in OT. They were 59 seconds away from winning game 7 in the 3rd period. Up 3-2 they once again could not clear the zone and ultimately gave the panthers a chance to score. They pulled their goalie in the last two minutes and got a shot off that went off McAvoy's stick. BAM. That sent it into OT...and as they say, the rest is history. Just like their amazing regular season. History.

“At the MFA, Hokusai’s oceans of influence” —
 The Boston Globe

From Claude Monet, Winslow Homer, and Loïs Mailou Jones to Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Yoshitomo Nara, countless artists have drawn inspiration from Katsushika Hokusai. Our major exhibition “Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence” takes you on a journey across centuries to see the ripple effects of the Great Wave and other iconic works by the prolific and versatile artist.
About one-third of the works in the exhibition are by Hokusai. Another third are by various artists active in Japan at the same time: his teachers, students, and rivals in the competitive world of woodblock publishing. The last third represents artists around the world, from the 1850s to the present, who admired Hokusai and incorporated elements of his work into their own creations.

Everyone needs a timed-entry ticket to see the exhibition. Become a member and you can see it at no extra cost! Weekends are selling out, so join us for an after-work outing or date night on Thursdays or Fridays, when we’re open until 10 pm. Pair your visit with dinner and drinks at New American Café, where new specials include a yellowfin tuna poke bowl, matcha cheesecake, sake, and a Hokusai-inspired “Blue Wave” cocktail. Next up was D-Day. The first day in the water. As luck (or bad luck) would have it. There was surf on Thursday April 27th. Real surf. In fact, there was too much surf. I told them early on that sometimes there’s too much surf and sometimes there’s not enough. It can be feast of famine when it comes to surfing here in NH. But that’s part of the allure. The never knowing. The challenges that each of us face whenever there’s a swell. Wind, tides, and swell direction. And of course wave size.

We got the gear from Cinnamon Rainbows in the late morning and headed over to 14th Street to meet up with Erica and Clara. Thank God they were there because the surf this day was a solid 4’ with 5’ sets. The wind was howling onshore and the tide was low but coming up. In short, we had our hands full. Erica and I have worked together for 15 years with the Wounded Warriors and 13 years with SURFING WITH SMILES. So we’re no strangers to this kind of situation.

We started off with the typical on the beach lessons. How to lay on the board, how to paddle, and eventually how to stand on the board. This is BOOT CAMP for the girls. The one thing I noticed about working with girls over the years, is they tend to listen more intently than the boys.

That’s a good thing. I am one for always bringing up how to protect your face and head after falling off (wiping out) your board. I feel that this is important part of surfing that rarely gets mentioned. How to come up from being underwater, with your hands in front of your face. The reason being is: the waves and the surfboard don’t know, or care about you, or where you are. Loose boards can hurt you. As can the waves themselves. So I insist they learn to protect their faces whenever they fall. And let’s face it, everybody falls.

Well, the girls all did well on the beach, but now, it was time to test their mettle. They all grabbed their boards and headed for the ocean (which seemed to be getting bigger by the minute).

Erica was insistent about them being athletes, and thought we should just go for it. So we did.

Because it was nearly impossible to get outside, we had them wade out to their waist to chest depth and push off and catch waves (like most of us did when we were all learning). And much to our surprise, they did remarkably well. We did the baby steps first.

Ride a few on your stomach and then a few on your knees and then the pop up to your feet.

They all caught waves, and they all popped up to their feet, and rode the waves to the beach.

The photos and video don’t lie. They were catching waves and standing up. Were they actually surfing? Yes and no. I mean, what is surfing? Riding a wave. Whether or not you’re laying down, sitting down, kneeling, or standing. That’s surfing in a nutshell. So yes they were surfing.

I realized that they were not so much catching the waves on their own, as it was the waves catching them. The surf was pushing hard and it was a good test of them dealing with the power of the ocean. But having said that, they all did great. I was impressed. Erica was impressed.

And the most important thing of all, the girls were all laughing and having fun. I had told them all many times already that “Surfing is all about having fun. Because if you’re not having fun, why the hell are we doing this?” Hardly words of wisdom, but there’s not a surfer on the planet who does not agree with that.

(Above) I shot this selfie of Erica and I out in the water.

At one point Erica said to me, “It’s so cool to witness the birth of surfing with these girls.”

And that’s true. To be introduced to this wonderful and beautiful lifestyle of ours is indeed very cool. I did however warn them, that should they truly become invested in this thing of ours called “Surfing?” That they would need to be aware of what surfing has done to most of us. “You will miss birthdays, holidays, important meetings, boyfriends and future husbands will become second fiddle to surfing. You’re laughing now, but it’s true. I don’t know a single surfer who hasn’t gotten into some kind of trouble by blowing off something important to go and catch a few waves.”

Why is that? Because unlike humans, the waves are not on any kind of schedule. They show up unannounced. And most times, the window is very short. You need to be flexible to be a surfer and unfortunately, that means you will ultimately miss things.

We all laughed about that. But it’s true.

In the end, our goal is to get them to feel comfortable enough on their own, where they can paddle out beyond where the waves are breaking. Then to be able to sit on their boards correctly, facing out to sea. And then to spin around when a wave comes and paddle into a wave on their own. Pop up to their feet, ride the wave as far as they can and to end it by kicking out.

And of course, they will all learn the proper surf etiquette. The unwritten rules of surfing. *Click on the image above to see some of the rules and tips.

But so far so good. Our next go out is this coming week. That’s once this big swell starts to come down. It’s going to be big Sunday and Monday and Tuesday morning. So maybe midweek we’ll get them out there again. GIRLS ON CURLS are off to a good start.

 “SURFING HEALS ALL WOUNDS.”
 |
It's really looking more and more like our two choices for 2024 are going to be these two again. 45 and 46. It's true. Even with the shocking polls of 70% of the people polled (including democrats) say the DON'T want Biden to run. And 60% say they DON'T want Trump to run. I am clearly in that percentage group.

These pics above are who they really are. And these photoshopped cartoons (below) are what they think they are. Seriously. These are both laughable and pathetic.

Sorry 45 you will never be a SUPER HERO. Not with all these pending indictments piling up around you, you should be praying that you stay out of jail. I mean, there's some serious shit heading your way. You had your 15 minutes of fame. Time to face reality.

The reality is MOST of your own GOP members want you to just go away. You are toxic. And you have single handedly destroyed the party of Lincoln. That's quite the legacy. Walk away from the podium sir. You're all done. Let someone else run.

This might be the most laughable of them all.
He looks like that Bounty Hunter guy. Duane "DOG" Chapman from Hawaii. This is not the Joe Biden that we know. Look, they both did one term. Joe will be 86 when he finishes his term if he's reelected. 86? Come on people, that's insane. I'm going to be 72 this summer, I'm too freaking old to be president. Most people in their 70's are not capable of making worldly decisions. I know lots of people in their 70's and 80's who have all their facilities, but there's no way they should be running a country.
Not when there's plenty of younger candidates out there who are more tuned into what is happening today. Just say it ain't so Joe. Retire. Let it go. Sit back and take it easy. Read a good book. In fact, my book will be out late summer or early fall. I'll send you a an autographed copy, if you just sit down and take it easy.

Look we all get old. I don't have a problem with getting old. I do have a problem with older folks running the country into the ground. Or worse. We are facing grave dangers out there. I want to be comfortable with the knowledge that our Commander In Chief is awake and aware of what is going on around us.

 And you should be too.

BOTH FOX NEWS AND CNN FIRE THEIR TWO TOP CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTATORS.

Don Lemon from CNN and Tucker Carlson from Fox News got canned last week. That really shook up the news world. But honestly? It didn't faze me one bit. These guys are forever opening their mouths and spewing out nonsense just to appease their audiences. The real question is. Where will they surface?

I wonder if any of these new online betting programs are taking bets on where these two will end up. I'll tell you what would really be funny (and I'll bet anything quite popular)
is if they partnered up and did a show together. Now that I would watch.

 A NIGHT FOR THE BIRDS

Last Thursday night me and Jon Gozzo (SECRET SPOT) were driving west on Rt 101 when we both saw something that is considered to be very rare. No, it was not a UFO. Though it took us an hour or more to Google what it was, and to get confirmation. I saw it first and blurted out that "I just saw a White Red-Tailed Hawk." Jon saw it within seconds of me seeing it. We both were blown away by it. Seriously, we knew it was something special.

OK so what was it Mr Marlin Perkins of the Northeast?
Well according to Uncle Google it was a Leucistic Red-Tailed Hawk. Extremely rare.
But we both saw it clear as day. A solid all white red-tailed hawk.

In all the years I've spent in the great outdoors all over New England, I had never seen one until that night A Leucistic Red Tailed Hawk. I would say that's checked off my bucket list, but I honestly had no idea it even existed.

And Speaking of RARE BIRDS ...

Our favorite Jailbird Khalid Sheik Mohammed had secretly set up a double interview with the two recently canned Commentators Don Lemon and Tucker Carlson. All was going pretty smoothly when Lemon and Carlson started arguing with each other about which questions they were going to ask The Sheik. That's when Ole Khaliddy lost his shit and started with the tired old yelling of "Allah Arkbar!" The guards came rushing in and removed Khaliddy from the makeshift studio and canceled the interview. Lemon and Carlson were left alone in the studio for what seemed like an eternity, when the guards came back and said that KSM was not coming back, and that he was now watching the remake of Pinocchio in his cell. Damn you Khaliddy. That would have been a great interview. Keep your fingers crossed people. It still might happen. You never know. You just never know.

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a case of DISNEY VHS Tapes of Pinocchio at Home Depot this week.
