From The Tropical Waters Of Puerto Rico To The Biggest Snow Storm of the Year! Local Legend Dies in PR. Local NH Boy Makes ESM cover, while another local boy gets the "Who Da Guy" in ESM.

OK. I'm writing this blog while 70mph wind gusts and a driving snow is pounding against my windows. How is it possible that I was just in the tropics on Sunday, and now I am sitting back home, in the Snow storm of the year? It's crazy, but I'm not at all surprised. It is after all, the lifestyle of a New Englander surfer. We get on these metal flying machines and hurtle through space at incredible speeds, while sitting next to total strangers trying to make small talk. I am not a jet setter by any means, but I have been flying since the late sixties. It still blows my mind. Here today gone to Maui. Only our Maui was Rincon Puerto Rico, and boy did we all need it.

The day we arrived in Rincon, the surf was going off. It was a solid 10-15' with a driving rain. Not exactly what we had been looking forward to. But, it was the tropics, and really, what's the big deal about rain when you just left single digits back home? There wasn't a single complaint in our group. However, that Monday would prove to be a sad day in Rincon.

A local surfer Brian Ward, age 58, was out surfing at Dogmans. It would end up being his last day on this earth. I did not know Brian, so I am not going to write about my personal relationship with him. I did know people who did know him. And every single one of them all had the same nice things to say about him. It's always sad to hear of a surfer passing away. It's even sadder to think that he was actually out surfing the day he did pass.

This is Brian Ward at Tres Palmas. Everyone said he could rip.

This is Brian back home in his native New York. Mike Nelson took this pic.

He was a retired NYC firefighter who had recently moved to PR. He was that serious about his surfing. And really, PR is such a great place for East Coast surfers. I'm sure the Island is full of East Coasters who have made that pilgrimage to a warmer, friendlier climate. They don't call PR the Hawaii of the East Coast for nothing. No Brian was like so many others, he left the cold for the tropics. He was only 58. And while that may seem old to some of you, it's a hell of a lot younger than old bucks like me.

So his death really hit home with me. I'm 8 years his elder. And I'm not ready.

Some have said that he went out doing what he loved. He was surfing.

Still, having a major heart attack while out in big surf and eventually drowning doesn't sound that appealing to me. And only Brian knows, what those last moments were like. Looking at this photo, I can't help but think he had more days ahead of him that he was looking forward to. He just looks too healthy.
Maybe he had a heart condition that we are not aware of. I heard that he got a couple of bombs that morning. Good on you Brian. You went out in conditions that not many others would attempt. And from what we all heard, you rode them well.

On Saturday they had what would be the first of many "Surfer's Paddles" .
The local crew who knew and loved him where there to give him the proper surfer's send off. To his family and friends, we send our most sincere condolences. And to those of you who surf Marias and Dogmans on a regular basis, the next time you're out there, let one get by you. Let Brian have it. If someone asks why you didn't go, remind them of who Brian was.

I took this photo the next day at the same spot he lost his life.

Now for some good news. While we were all basking in the PR sun and surf, we got some great news about two local surfers. Mikel "Mikey" Evans and Perry Reynolds. Mikey landed on the cover of ESM. Brian Nevins shot a beautiful pic of Mikey on the nose at the Wall.

Mikey Evans and Kevin Grondin are the only two from NH to have graced the cover at ESM. Can't tell you how proud of Mikey we all are. Suffice it to say, we're pretty dammed proud. This kid shapes and rides his own creations. And on a personal level, my son has been riding one of Mikey's creations and just killing it out there. I've known Mikey since he was an infant. So he didn't come out of nowhere in my eyes. It's been a long and deliberate road. Starting with his family. His dad Rick has obviously been a huge inspiration for him. Rick has been surfing forever. His mom Karen has been a surf mom as long as anyone. His brother Matt and sister Meighan have all been raised on the beach, surfing and hanging since day one.

This week's pic from Ed's corner was shot on September 14th, 2013. The surfer is DJ. No doubt this was taken at the Wall. This was during Tropical Storm Gabrielle. I remember that storm. Do you?

To see more of Ed's pics just scroll through the archives. He has shot so many pics for the blog. Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog. Photo by Ed O'Connell

Now for Some More Of My Weekly Global Observances
The Patriots are once again making moves to win their 6th Superbowl. And they are also once again making many fans (like me) squirm with their reluctance to sign Donta Hightower and Malcolm Butler. You would think that we would have learned our lesson over the years when they let some of their best players go. Well, I for one have not. I still question some of King Belichick's moves. But for the life of me, I don't get this one.

All I know is, if Butler doesn't make this pic in 2014 we lose.

And...if Hightower doesn't make this strip sack we lose this year's Superbowl. I think these two players and these two moves must account for something. Am I right people? Two of our top defensive players must stay with our team NO MATTER what.

Look who was right there in 2014 when Butler makes that pick?

Local boy Perry Reynolds makes the WHO DA GUY section.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
Well looky here folks. Ole KSM is out blowing snow at GITMO. Are you like me and think that KSM should not be allowed near a Snowblower? What if a Christian or Jew walks by? You know he's going full Al Qeada if they do. I can see him sticking the head of a Christian or a Jew in the snowblower. This shit is alarming to me.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a container for gas and oil this week
at Home Depot this week.

Prayers and positive thoughts to Erica Nardone's recovery.

GET WELL SOON Karen Evans!
Congrats to Mikey Evans (making the cover of ESM).
RIP Brian Ward.

(Below) This cheap instamatic pic was taken by one of my college buddies the winter we hit it down to Florida to surf the Inlet and other spots. This is me walking out to Shark Pit. On this particular day, we had Mike Tabeling and David Nuiwahva stop and check out my custom board. That was a big deal back then. Both of those guys were real surf legends during that time period.
