      | MATT GEORGE'S GREAT NEW BOOK.MUCH MORE MUCHO MARCH SURF.
45 AND PUTIN INDICTED THE SAME WEEK.

So my good friend Sam George, who is perhaps one of the best known writers and journalists in the surf Industry today, sent out an email blast this week promoting his brother Matt George's new book IN DEEP. I have posted many of Sam's writings here on the Blog and still have an ad for his website with some of the coolest surf stories you will ever read. So whenever his email came in I sat right up in my chair and read it.

I'm not sure what's in the water there in Central California, but Matt is one of three individuals who are like walking talking encyclopedias of surfing. The aforementioned Sam, Jeff Chamberlain (Sam's good buddy and an excellent writer himself), and now Matt. All three can write about surfing unlike any of the current Bloggers, writers, and documenters out there. Here's what Sam had to say about his brother Matt.

 IN DEEP
A Chapter From Matt George's New Book
If you have any interest in great writing, especially about surfers and surf culture, then my brother Matt’s new book, a collection of his previously published stories, is an absolute must-read. I’ve included here a particularly compelling chapter, written only a few days after as editor of SURFER Magazine I dispatched him to Kauai to report on the world’s most famous shark attack. I should have known that simply reporting on the incident was the last thing he had in mind. I mean, just look at the portrait he shot. The whole book is like this.
RED WATER: BETHANY HAMILTON AND THE TEETH OF THE TIGER She had been leading a daredevil life for weeks now. And in the end, she had no idea the trouble she was getting herself into.
Swimming beneath the moon, swimming beneath the sun, but swimming. Always swimming. And starving.October 31, 2003— Hā'ena, Kauai
Patrolling the reefs for opportunity, for blood, for flesh. Swinging her massive, blunted head with the regularity of a metronome, propelling her fourteen feet of mass through the depths with effortless power.

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys.
He was a dear friend of mine. When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers. Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

This is yet another unknown regular foot. Though it might be Mike Stanek. But I'm pretty sure Mike would have been riding one of his own creations back then. But, I can't be 100% sure. Only Mike himself can answer that question. This pic was taken in March of 2008. Photo by Ed O'Connell

RETT'S ROOST POLAR PLUNGE IN MEMORY OF
 SUPER
          EVAN AUSTIN

On March 12th, 2023 the Austin family, along with dozens of supporters, and friends did the Rett's Roost Polar Plunge at North Beach (The Wall) in Hampton, NH to raise awareness, and to help find a cure to DIPG and other childhood cancers. Brent and Jess Austin, and daughter Avery, lost their son and brother Evan to DIPG ( a rare brain cancer that only strikes children). Retts Roost is a sanctuary for families dealing with the unimaginable loss of a child.
Brent and Jess asked me once again to film this year's polar plunge ( I did one last year). The big difference between this year's event, and last year was, there was huge surf out there. I mean the ocean was roaring. There was a strong rip running, and the water was freezing. But that didn't stop the Austins, or their friends and family from jumping into the frigid North Atlantic waters. Evan Austin is a lot like Molly Rowlee, in the fact that they both passed way before their time from childhood cancer, but more importantly, they remind me of each other because of the way the Seacoast community has rallied around their family, in their unwavering support for both families. I once said about Molly, that she will never be forgotten here on the Seacoast. That her memory and legacy will live on forever. The same is true for Evan Austin. The name SUPER EVAN AUSTIN will long be remembered here on the seacoast. I hope and pray that someday, they will find a cure for DIPG, and that no other family will have to go through what the Austins and others have gone through. Long live Evan Ryan Austin.

      |
With her ragged dorsal fin breaking the surface, she had been bumping into surfers for weeks now. Testing them, feeling their fear, waiting for her time.

They seemed such easy prey. Slow, awkward, lounging on the surface like something dying. And now, one of them was in her path, it was time. Another was here, apart from the rest. Alone and weak. And this one looked so small and frail. She approached her prey from the side, taking her time, timing the strokes of the thin, pale arm that dipped off the surfboard in a rhythm of bubbles. With one last savage kick of her great tail, she opened her jaws in a ragged yawn, and taking the thin, pale arm in her throat, she clamped down with over 16 tons of sawing pressure. And as her teeth met, she effortlessly plucked it from the human body and swallowed it whole.
The bite was so clean and painless that Bethany Hamilton, just 13, noticed that the sea had turned red before she realized that her arm was gone at the shoulder. A strange serenity came over her, a warmth, as her body began to scream its outrage. Spurting gouts of rich, burgundy blood, Bethany struggled over to her best friend, Alana Blanchard, also thirteen, and could only manage the words, “I think a shark just attacked me.” Alana told Bethany to “not even joke about that.” Imagine the dilemma of Holt Blanchard, 45, who was now a quarter mile offshore with his son and his daughter and a profusely bleeding and gravely injured 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton. And somewhere below his feet was a large, dangerous shark. With Bethany’s arm gone at the shoulder, a tourniquet was out of the question. To stem the blood, Holt could only manage a compress with the t-shirt he was wearing.
Then Alana’s eyes saw something that her mind couldn’t grasp.

The bleeding stump where her best friend’s left arm used to be. Alana’s stomach revolted and purged twice before she could call for her father and her brother, who were paddling for a nearby wave.

Holt now had an impossible decision to make.

Should he send his children on ahead, across the deep lagoon, to keep them away from a bleeding Bethany? And if so, how could he protect them? Should he keep them close, where at least he imagined he could put himself between them and the shark should it return for Bethany? For one brief moment, he even thought of somehow opening his own wrists and slipping into the sea to await his fate while the other three made for shore.

With no time to deliberate, he made his decision on instinct.

Keep the family close, face the danger together. He instructed his daughter to keep the pressure on the blood-soaked t-shirt and to keep talking to a fading Bethany. Then he and his son rigged their surfboard leashes and began dragging Bethany and Alana to shore on a raft made of their surfboards.
Cheri Hamilton, mother of Bethany, who had yet to see her daughter, was driving so fast behind the ambulance that some cops pulled her over. It wasn’t until the ambulance driver radioed back that the cops let Cheri go. As she mashed the accelerator to the floor of the salt-rusted family station wagon, a call came in on her cell phone. It was Holt Blanchard. Cheri asked him how badly Bethany was hurt. The conversation went like this: Holt: You mean you don’t know?Tom Hamilton, Bethany’s father, was just about to be put under for a knee operation on the only operating table that the small local hospital owned. A shaken nurse poked her head in the room and informed the team that a terrible emergency was coming in and that they needed the table right away. Tom limped into the corridor in his hospital gown as the operating theater made ready for an emergency surgery.
 Cheri: Know what?

 Holt: Cheri…her arm is gone.

 Cheri: (Long Pause) Gone where?

Tom blanched when a brusque orderly asked him what his blood type was. Learning that there had been a shark attack on a young girl at Makua Beach, Tom’s heart squeezed. He knew he had only a fifty-fifty chance, since Bethany and Alana were the only fourteen-year-old girls on the island with the guts enough to surf the reef at Makua Beach. Tom stood in the corridor in his hospital gown as the victim was being wheeled into the hospital. He held his breath; he would know in a second.

Alana had dark brown hair, Bethany’s was blonde. As the gurney turned the corner, all the air in Tom’s chest disappeared. The hair was blonde. It has been widely known that the tiger shark’s characteristic serrated tooth shape and grotesquely powerful jaws have evolved for specialized feeding on large sea turtles. Sea turtles whose shells cannot be split by a grown man with an axe. Called the hyena of the sea, the tiger shark strikes with a sawing motion of its bottom jaw against the bone razor blades of its top jaw. It is known as the deadliest bite of any shark. Bethany’s arm was removed so cleanly, with such precision and efficiency, that the operating doctor, upon first seeing the wound, was confused. He wanted to know who the son of a bitch was that had amputated without his permission.
The next day, after word had spread through the islands, legendary big wave surfer Laird Hamilton, no relation to Bethany, called his father, Billy, another legendary surfer, and told him if he didn’t go out and “kill this fucking shark”, he was going to do it himself. Fourteen days later, much to the outrage of the indigenous Hawaiian population, Billy Hamilton and Ralph Young hauled to the beach a fourteen-foot female tiger shark with a ragged dorsal fin. It took a gutted five-foot gray shark as bait and a barbed hook the size of dinner plate to do it. Butchering the beast offshore, away from prying eyes, they found no evidence of Bethany’s arm or her pink watch or her charm bracelet or the 18-inch semi-circle of her surfboard that the shark had taken all at once.

Experts claimed that the shark would have long before regurgitated the irritating fiberglass and probably the arm with it. However, removing the jaws from the carcass and matching them to Bethany’s board, the Hawaiian Fish and Game forensic team revealed that it was a perfect fit.

Aside from the jaws, the only other part of the shark that was saved was a section of its dusky, striped skin. This skin was presented to Boy Akana, a local Kahuna, or Polynesian priest, who would stretch the skin over ceremonial drums to call on the ancient spirits to calm the seas. Twenty-four hours later, Hawaiian Governor Linda Lingle was said to decree that the matter was now closed and that the tourist industry should get back to normal.
Seven days after the catch of the great fish, Bethany Hamilton pays a visit to Ralph Young’s fishing compound with her father Tom. Bethany, at her own request, is there to visit the jaws that took her arm. Crouching beside the jaws in the middle of the lawn, they come up to Bethany’s shoulder. The jaws are still bloody and have shards of feeding tissue hanging from their teeth.
For long moments the men stand around uncomfortably as Bethany curiously pokes at the razor-sharp teeth one by one. Then she looks up and asks her father if she can have one of the teeth for a necklace she would like to make. An amulet to protect her in the future. The men are so stunned that nobody speaks. Upon leaving the compound with her father, Bethany is overheard saying, “I hope I don’t have dreams.”

On the drive home, it rains. With a sleeping Bethany next to him in the car, with the windshield wipers beating time, Tom Hamilton begins to hum a tune. He has not thought of this tune for a long, long time. Not since he was in the U.S. Navy as a young gunner’s mate. His lips move slightly as he recalls the words of the Navy Hymn: “Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm does bind the restless wave,

Who biddest the mighty Ocean deep,

 Its own appointed limits keep,

O hear us when we cry to thee,

For those in peril on the sea.”
Driving on through the rain, these are the only words Tom Hamilton can remember. He reaches out to gently take his daughter’s hand.

 But it is not there.

We watched the Oscars last Sunday Night and couldn't help but notice this. Are you freaking kidding me? Look, I don't care what color your skin is. I don't even care what your gender is. But for the love of God, why would you wear a freaking PARACHUTE on your head to the Oscars? Clearly she has no concern or respect for those sitting behind her. And she certainly didn't give a RAT'S ASS about her poor date. See him trying to look past the Parachute? This is just absurd. There's no other explanation.

And she knew exactly what she was doing. Getting noticed.

Let's face it. That's what Tinsel Town is all about. Getting noticed. At least nobody got bitch slapped.

"THEY CALL IT STORMY MONDAY. BUT TUESDAYS ARE JUST AS BAD." 45 just found out that he's being arrested this coming Tuesday for the Payoff to Porn Star Stormy Daniels.
And in true 45 fashion, he's calling for PROTESTS. Gee, does that sound familiar?
It's January 6th all over again.

Unlike last week, this is not funny. It's not funny at all.
In my honest opinion, 45 should be in jail, and should never be allowed to run for public office again. And while I'm on the subject. If any of the facts are true about 46? He too should be held accountable. And he should not be allowed to run for office. But mostly because he should be in a Nursing home, wearing a bib, and eating soft serve ice-cream.

If these two end up being our choices for 2024? Oy ve.

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

 I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal.
Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.
